The Capacity Building Seminar-Workshop on Cultural Heritage Tourism and Heritage Education and Interpretation was conceptualized with the recognition of the role of culture, arts, history, and heritage in the tourism industry as the source of all memorable tourism experiences. As tourism becomes a global phenomenon and concern, a deeper appreciation of the rigors of cultural heritage tourism could direct a more responsive education and meaningful interpretation of people and places. Through a collaboration, the 探花精选 &苍产蝉辫;鈥&苍产蝉辫; (CCCPET) and Center for Continuing Professional Education and Development (CCPED) and Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines (ATOP) assume this responsibility and advocacy to inculcate the creative role of tourism officers on the lives of every traveler and impress the critical role of tourism in the overall development of the country.

The six-day seminar-workshop with two modules such as Cultural Heritage Tourism and Heritage Education and Interpretation is a combination of lectures, workshops, and fieldwork.

The poll of speakers consists of Thomasian educators and practitioners from the field of cultural heritage, tourism, architecture, advertising, and communication.

Dr. Eric B. Zerrudo, Director of CCCPET, conceptualized the whole program and delivered a majority of the lectures on cultural heritage concepts, development framework, interpretation framework, tourism studies, and the Filipino brand of service. He was joined by Atty. Gezzez Giezi G. Granado (Dean of the ) in discussing tourism laws and legislations, and Jame Monren Mercado (Faculty Member of College of Tourism and Hospitality Management), who presented his researches on culinary and tourism development plan. UST Cultural Heritage Studies alumni presented different case studies such as festival loyalty by John Christopher Mesana; hospitality and management by April Joy Dope帽o; culture in the planning framework and memory project by Kinna Mae G. Kwan; graphic arts in Philippine prints by Carla Gamalinda; and giant lantern documentation by Raphael Emmanuelle Kalaw. They were also joined by Michael Manalo, a Thomasian architect and professor who discussed conservation management planning, and Philippe Jose Hernandez discussed the role of communication in heritage.

Other speakers invited were Mickel Ollave, Community Organizer of Puerto Princesa Underground Subterranean River Natural Park, who shared their best practices of community organizing; Cecille Gelicame of De La Salle University Dasmari帽as shared the role of curators in historical and heritage sites; and Mr. Reymart Cerin, a practitioner in the field of advertising also shared his experiences in branding and marketing of heritage sites.

The seminar-workshop was attended by 41 tourism officers from different provinces, cities and municipalities in the Philippines. It was held in Prime City Resort Hotel in Angeles City, Pampanga from February 4-9, 2020.

The 探花精选 paid tribute to forty-five (45) faculty retirees on May 8, 2019, in a testimonial at the Grand Ballroom of the Buenaventura G. Paredes, O.P. Building.

Nothing but gratitude

In his response, Prof. Ricardo Agbayani, MD, the first Dean of the old Institute of Physical Therapy, said that retirement is a 鈥渨onderful feeling of looking forward to a future of more leisure, less pressure from duties and responsibilities, and getting around to the many things I always said 鈥業 will do it someday.鈥 But I also feel a tinge of sadness leaving behind what has been such an important part of my life, the 探花精选.鈥

Agbayani heaped praises on the University, saying 鈥淚 have been blessed. I have received graces. I was given so many opportunities in my whole life in this University. I had spent practically all my life in this University, my home for the past 48 years.鈥

Agbayani, who earned his pre-medical degree in the College of Science by being a working student, recounted his journey in UST, which began in 1971. He paid homage to those benefactors who helped him finish both degrees in UST, which led him to pursue his specialization in rehabilitation medicine. After training abroad, Agbayani became the Director and eventual first Dean of the Institute of Physical Therapy, the present-day College of Rehabilitation Sciences.

Agbayani thanked numerous people who made his career one to be extremely grateful for, from the administrators who mentored him, as well as his former students who are now leaders in the University. 鈥淚 thank my students most especially, for you have made me what I am today.鈥

The gift that teachers receive

In his remarks, the Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., PhD, Rector of the University, said that teachers receive gratitude from two sources: 1) 鈥渢he students who look up to you as role models and whom you have inspired to be better versions of themselves鈥; and 2) 鈥渢he university that acknowledges that an institution of higher learning is as good as its teaching force.鈥

鈥淭he University is known to be one of the best universities largely due to the tremendous role played by its faculty,鈥 Fr. Dagohoy.

鈥淭here is really nothing wrong about endings. We just cannot help but feel a little sad when good things come to an end, but we must remember that as a saying goes, 鈥楾here is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.鈥 [Likening it to our Christian faith], we see it as God鈥檚 promise, like His promise to Noah that He will not punish men the same way again.鈥

Closing his message, Fr. Dagohoy highlighted the journey that the faculty members went through: 鈥淥ur trek from where the rainbow begins and where it ends is, indeed, very wonderful. We experience both success and failure in our journey, but in the end, we know that we have learned quite a lot and have become better persons. The pot of the gold at the end of the rainbow is a special kind of treasure that includes many things, among them happiness, contentment, gratitude, fulfilment, quality time with loved ones, with oneself, thanksgiving, and savoring the beauty of life. There is so much [more to life] than work.鈥

In what can be described as a heartfelt homecoming, Ronaldo 鈥淩onnie鈥 G. del Carmen, Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising Arts alumnus 鈥 Batch 1985, returned to the 探花精选 for an encounter with the University administrators, faculty members and the present-day College of Fine Arts and Design students.

Del Carmen had a taste of what it feels like to be a Thomasian nowadays, as he began his homecoming by walking through the historic Arch of the Centuries, an act reminiscent of last Wednesday鈥檚 (August 6, 2015) Thomasian Welcome Walk. He gamely posed for photographs in front of the Arch and upon reaching the statue of Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, he exclaimed: 鈥淲e used to draw him a lot during our time!鈥滻n his courtesy call to the University Vice-Rector, Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., Del Carmen paid tribute to the University, saying that everything began for him in UST.He then had the chance to speak in front of a jam-packed crowd in the Beato Angelico Audio-Visual Room, which was bursting at the seams with students, faculty members and administrators who all came to witness one of Fine Arts鈥 proudest sons come home.

Relating to his most recent movie, 鈥淚nside Out,鈥 del Carmen said he was 鈥淛oy鈥 when he finally got in the old College of Architecture and Fine Arts to begin studying art. Del Carmen鈥檚 good friend, fellow Thomasian Ruben Nepales, Jr., recounted how Ronnie had to overcome poverty just to finish his studies. This del Carmen did, graduating at the age of 25.

Ever true to his humble beginnings, del Carmen stressed to the students that while technology for art is there, they should not forget that everything begins with what every first grader knows: a pencil and a paper. He urged them to cultivate creativity, make mistakes and learn from them, and explore their potentials.

Del Carmen also told them that art is storytelling, and that animation and film-making are fields that truly require a great storyteller. While he said that structure and templates are provided, great storytelling happens when it comes from the heart鈥攚hen emotions of the narrator touch the emotions of the listener. This, he said, is the inspiration behind 鈥淚nside Out,鈥 the emotions that people go through and how these can help one relate with another.

The encounter ended in a truly CAFA/CFAD way, with Ronnie gamely drawing his favorite character, 鈥淪adness,鈥 on a sketch pad. An advertising senior, Ava Aboy, gave del Carmen a portrait of the animator, which Ronnie happily received. Del Carmen likewise received a statuette of Beato Angelico, the Angelic Artist, a perpetual reminder that art is a gift from God, offered to God in the service of the nation, the Church and the world, according to Fr. Edgardo D. Alaurin, O.P., CFAD Regent.鈥淚nside Out鈥 by Disney-Pixar will be shown in Philippine theaters on August 19, 2015.
