In the June 2, 2025 joint memorandum signed by Department of Education Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Atty. Fatima Lipp D. Panontongan and Assistant Secretary Malcolm S. Garma, UST was included in the list pilot schools, both public and private, this School Year 2025-2026. In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Senior High School Principal Mary Erika N. Bola帽os, PhD, expressed delight at UST鈥檚 inclusion in the list because 鈥渂eing a pilot school means DepEd sees the kind of work and commitment we put into education. Being part of this pioneering initiative allows us to contribute meaningfully to national educational reforms while ensuring our students continue to receive a future-ready, values-based education.鈥�

Bola帽os further added that UST鈥檚 鈥渓ong-standing tradition of academic excellence, coupled with our strong sense of community and collaboration, places us in a unique position to provide grounded, data-informed feedback to DepEd.鈥� She highlighted the interdisciplinary learning and close collaboration with the tertiary programs and industry partners as potential sources of experience-based data that DepEd may find useful in the eventual national rollout. Being UST鈥檚 largest academic unit with over 5,000 students, UST was classified as a 鈥渧ery large school,鈥� a perfect venue to test the viability of the new curriculum in such setting.

UST, which has implemented six tracks/strands, including the innovative Health-Allied Strand, is now joining the country in the transition to a more streamlined implementation of the curriculum. The Principal allayed concerns on the loss of tracks and strands and the specialized training each brings: “The integrity of our strands and tracks will be preserved. [Instead of strands] we are offering pathways to their chosen career or tertiary program, providing electives that are helpful for them. Our programs, namely Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; Music, Arts, and Design; Business and Entrepreneurship; Sports and Life Skills; Health Allied and Wellness; and Humanities and Social Sciences, are still there, strengthening the vertical articulation of our SHS programs with the University’s tertiary offerings.”

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH stated that 鈥渢he UST SHS program has always been structured as a pre-baccalaureate program. Since its inception and implementation in the University, our SHS strands have been aligned with our baccalaureate degree programs, allowing us to take advantage of our comprehensive degree offerings as a higher education institution to prepare students for their future careers, beginning with their basic education. We are fortunate for the opportunity to conduct inter-level collaborative planning sessions, particularly between baccalaureate and graduate programs, to identify gaps and overlaps in the various curricula and effectively plan curricular modifications to ensure attainment of expected learning outcomes and competencies. We have been doing these collaborative planning sessions since the COVID-19 pandemic, even when we were still operating online, and these allowed us to anticipate concerns much earlier and implement measures to address them sooner.鈥�

Despite the reduction in subjects to be taught, VRAA Peralta added that 鈥淯ST is committed to contextualizing the SSHS curriculum to our institutional approach and available resources, including implementing retooling programs for academic staff to ensure that they will be able to continue teaching in the SSHS curriculum.鈥� The SHS Principal stated: “We are committed to a just and compassionate transition. We are engaging in a comprehensive capacity-building program to upskill and retool our faculty to respond to the curricular shifts.”

On June 11, 2025, the Senior High School rolled out its first retooling session, with more capacity-building sessions expected in the coming month.

The Work Immersion Program will be delivered in a hybrid mode, with trainings and lectures about primary health care and safety services, as well as emergency nursing. In a post by AHMC, the program “aims to provide Senior High School Allied Health students with immersive, hands-on experience in a hospital setting, bridging academic learning with real-world healthcare practice.” AHMC added: “This collaboration highlights both institutions鈥� commitment to excellence in healthcare education, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and exposure necessary to excel in the medical field.”

The agreement was signed on March 6, 2025 (Thursday) between AHMC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Beaver R. Tamesis and UST Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH. Complying with the Congress’s pledge to diversity, researchers from UST gave talks and took part in panels that broadened the discussion on Filipino philosophy and its role in international discourse. Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas of the Department of Philosophy, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics was a major contributor to the Congress. In addition to moderating and chairing the PAP Society Session titled “Filipino Philosophy in Dialogue: Expanding the Conversation,” Aguas contributed to the Center for Research in Values and Philosophy (CRVP) Round Table Discussion on National Values by presenting a paper titled “The Ambiguity of the Filipino Sense of Nationalism and Filipino Identity.”

Aguas also presented the paper entitled “The Relevance of the Metaphysics and the Notions of Being and Analogy of St. Thomas.”

These talks demonstrated the breadth and depth of philosophical study at UST and the contributions made by Filipino academics to international philosophical debates. Additionally, through one-on-one interactions, the Congress gave Filipino scholars a rare chance to fortify relationships and build mutual trust.

The Congress emphasized Rome’s long-standing position as a crossroads of civilizations, and it began with a ceremony at the ancient Baths of Caracalla. Prof. Luca Maria Scarantino, President of FISP, and Prof. Antonella Polimeni, Rector of Sapienza University, both emphasized the merging of humanistic and scientific cultures in philosophical conversations, reinforcing this subject of interconnection in their introductory statements.

Scholars addressed pressing ethical, social, cultural, political, and spiritual concerns all week long. Topics covered included the ethics of artificial intelligence, with discussions on the implications of AI on human decision-making and the ethical responsibilities of AI developers, and the place of spirituality in secular cultures, with debates on the role of spirituality in a modern, secular society. The Congress featured round table discussions, invited sessions, symposia, contributed paper sessions, endowed lectures, plenary sessions, student sessions, and the FISP General Assembly. The goal of these talks was to question conventional wisdom in philosophy by tackling issues of sustainability, gender and cultural diversity, inequality, and other modern world concerns.

Every five years, the WCP is arranged by the Federation Internationale des Soci茅t茅s de Philosophie (FISP) or the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. The WCP is a major conference that brings together philosophers, educators, students, and philosophy aficionados worldwide for a week-long discussion of a certain issue.

Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas, PhD of the Department of Philosophy discoursed on 鈥淐hristian Humanism and St. Thomas鈥檚 Notion of the Human Person,鈥� where he acknowledged that as science and technology advanced, spiritual dimensions of human life often became ignored. Using Aquinas鈥檚 philosophy, Aguas 鈥渟hows that a humanism centered on Christian belief is still a relevant and more acceptable proposition over modern and secular humanism.鈥� Furthermore, Aguas said that 鈥渇or St. Thomas, man has a spiritual component, and he is ordained towards God. He developed a Christian humanism anchored on theological personalism, a concept that emphasizes the unique relationship between each individual and God and how this relationship shapes our understanding of human dignity and purpose.鈥�

Meanwhile, Junior Teacher Blaise D. Ringor, PhD of the Senior High School and concurrent Academic Collaborations Officer of the Ecclesiastical Faculties, presented his paper entitled 鈥淔rom Garden of Eden to Garden of Gethsemane: Dietrich von Hildrebrand鈥檚 Ethics of Incommensurability as a Justification of Loving as Critical Thinking,鈥� where he argued that the interiority of the person is neglected by traditionalist views of ethics. In doing so, he looks at Dietrich von Hildrebrand鈥檚 critique and discourses on the former鈥檚 ethics of incommensurability to address the flaw by integrating the reality of loving into critical thinking. Ringor argued that 鈥淗ildebrand鈥檚 approach provides a robust ethical framework that acknowledges the full complexity of the human person, thereby enriching critical thinking with a deeper understanding of love’s ethical significance.鈥�

The RCSSED鈥檚 Research Utilization Unit, headed by Rey, anchors itself on three pillars: life and dignity (buhay at dangal); human rights (karapatang pantao); and democracy (demokrasya). According to RCSSED Director Jeremaiah Opiniano, the Center aims to have more regular engagements with policy makers in the future and expressed openness to having the researchers work on topics/issues of interest to the local legislators and officials.
